Measuring molten steel temperature requires specialized equipment

Measure molten steel temperature with specialized equipment at the foundry

The molten steel temperature is about 100°C higher than that of cast iron, enough to remove equipment designed only for cast iron.

Liquid steel is approximately 150-200°C hotter than molten iron, has a slag layer on its surface, and allows only a very short measurement time before pouring. These three conditions mean that equipment designed for molten iron cannot be used simply by changing the probe.

Specialized equipment here doesn't necessarily mean a dedicated machine; it means the right configuration: a body with an appropriate measurement range, high-temperature thermocouples, and a design that allows sufficient insertion depth.

Key Control Points

Measurement range

Confirm that the operating ranges of both the device and the thermocouple cover the actual molten steel temperature range.

Skim the slag

The probe must be long and durable enough to penetrate the slag layer without breaking.

Embed time

Quick insert: hold for 3-5 seconds, read the number once it stabilizes, then remove.

Follow the bucket

Each bucket is sampled individually; the batch average cannot be used to determine pouring.

Real-world experience

  • Keep a backup pair ready, as the probe may fail on its first dip.
  • Dry tools and buckets before measuring to prevent metal splatter.
  • Check weekly drift by comparing to a new pair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a cast iron tester measure steel?

Only if the instrument's measurement range and thermocouple are compatible. Verify specifications before using on steel production lines.

How often should the sensor be replaced?

Depending on the number of inserts and conditions. For steel, single-use probes are typically used for only one measurement.
