Which foundry should use a liquid iron analyzer?

Which foundries should use a molten iron analyzer on-site?

Most foundries fall into one of two scenarios: either they have composition data that no one uses, or they lack data entirely and rely solely on flame color for decisions.

In casting production, the interval between melting and pouring is typically very short. Whether carbon and silicon levels fall within specifications determines the microstructure and mechanical properties of the part after cooling. Consequently, many foundries have shifted composition testing from the lab to right before the furnace.

Not all workshops have the same needs. This article categorizes five common workshop types to help you assess your current situation before investing in analysis equipment.

Key Control Points

Gray iron foundry

Produce machine tool parts, pump housings, valves, and mechanical components. Gray iron is sensitive to equivalent carbon; therefore, measure C% and Si% in each batch to maintain fluidity and control shrinkage.

Steel foundry

In addition to C% and Si%, monitor the graphitization trend before and after spheroidizing; this group requires equipment with additional evaluation metrics.

Precision casting, continuous code changes

Each formula change requires a new code. The analyzer shortens the confirmation time after adjustments.

Use more recycled materials

Scrap, pig iron, and carbon additives vary by batch; testing each lot is the only way to determine its actual quality.

Real-world experience

  • If you have a single product line with stable ingredients, you can inspect by batch instead of by lot.
  • Even with a spectrometer, a pre-furnace thermal analyzer is still recommended because the two instruments answer different questions and have different wait times.
  • Don't choose a device based on the number of features; choose it based on the capabilities you actually use every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do small workshops really need to buy an analyzer?

Not required if the recipe is fixed and scrap ratio is low. However, when frequently changing grades or using high amounts of scrap, an analysis device helps reduce the number of batches that need remelting.

Can a thermal analyzer replace spectroscopy?

No. Thermal analysis provides fast results in the furnace for C%, Si%, and associated indices; spectroscopy detects more elements but is slower and requires carefully prepared samples.
