Thermal analysis for cast iron: from sampling to results

The interval from tapping the molten iron out of the furnace to the display showing a reading is approximately three minutes, and most errors occur during this window rather than in the equipment itself.
Thermal analysis is straightforward, but results depend heavily on operator technique—often more than expected. Even with the same equipment, different operators sampling the same material can produce values that vary enough to change pouring decisions.
The standard process consists of four steps: prepare the cup, pour the sample, wait for the curve to cool and stabilize, then read the result. Each step has its own common error, most of which can be prevented with a fixed procedure.
Key Control Points
Prepare cup
The cup must be dry and at room temperature; using a cup from a humid storage area is a common source of error.
Sample text
Pour once to fill the glass. Do not top up, and do not stir inside the glass.
Waiting for curve
Do not cool by blowing air or placing the cup on a cold surface; allow the sample to cool naturally under standard conditions.
Read and Write
Read C%, Si%, and associated indices, then immediately record them on the batch slip along with the batch number and sampling time.

Real-world experience
- Assign a dedicated sampler per case to minimize procedural variation.
- Run monthly lab tests on sample batches to detect system drift.
- Record batch and shift numbers; these are the first details to check when abnormal scrap occurs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do two measurements of the same batch differ?
Usually caused by non-representative samples or a damp cup. Please verify your operation before concluding that the device has an issue.
Can I use a disposable plastic cup?
No. The cup must withstand molten metal temperatures and have stable materials to allow for repeatable cooling curves.
