Manage temperature measurement data at the foundry

Temperature logs are often filled out but rarely reviewed, as there's no requirement for who should read them or why.
Many factories take regular temperature readings, but the data is unusable because numbers are scattered across shift logs or just read aloud and discarded. When an abnormality occurs, no one can determine the temperature of that batch.
Step 1 doesn't require a large system: just standardize a simple log that includes batch number, time, temperature, operator, and part code. After three weeks of consistent use, trends will start to emerge.
Key Control Points
Single record template
One form for every shift and furnace; different forms are incomparable.
Shift and hourly
Record both directions to determine if the issue lies with the batch or the operator.
Connect to the lung
Each scrap batch must record its corresponding temperature and composition.
Review periodically
Check once a week to catch gradual drifts, not just when issues arise.

Real-world experience
- Start with paper and spreadsheets; switch to connected devices only once the recording process is stable.
- Set warning thresholds based on the temperature range for each part code, rather than using a single shared threshold.
- Retain records for at least one year to verify seasonal or material source changes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the device support automatic data saving?
Multiple lines store results in memory, but capacity and data export methods must be confirmed at checkout.
Do I need separate software?
Not required. Spreadsheets work well for small workshops; consider a system only when multiple users need simultaneous access.
